Song vs. Song 65: "Stairway to Heaven" vs. "Free Bird"
You listen to these podcasts, there's often something you want to say to the people on the podcast. But it's this one way traffic, and so that's why I've decided to write about this one.
I didn't care for Led Zeppelin when I was in High School, despite the fact that all my friends loved it. I also didn't have any Lynyrd Skynyrd albums. I still don't have albums by these two, but I do have 'Free Bird' as a single. Part of the problem is that they've been overplayed. I very rarely listen to radio, but if I was I would probably change the station if either of them came on. Which is different from putting 'Free Bird' in a playlist and listening to it. So I think if you're just talking longevity, then 'Free Bird' is the winner.
On the other hand, I wouldn't change the station if an underplayed Zeppelin or Skynrd song came on. An obvious problem for me would be that Led Zepplin stole the song from the band 'Spirit'. Nothing new there, as they are well known music thieves. I never understood the visual appeal of Led Zeppelin, which is a guy wearing a shirt half open. I definitely understand the appeal of Southern Country Rock, and I like their style.
I've listened to a number of versions of 'Free Bird' live, and it's just amazing from a technical point of view. These guys had a work ethic, and that's something I admire. And then there's Jimmy Page who I consider to be one of the most overrated guitar players ever.
In the end it just has to be 'Free Bird'.
