Song vs. Song 15: "Let It Be" vs. "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
This comparison is wrong on so many levels. Comparing one of the most banal Beatles song ever to a good Rolling Stones song is like stacking the deck. "You Can't Always Get" is a better song, but then it's better than a fair number of weak songs by The Beatles. Like 'Michelle'. So bad it's painful.
I grew up listening to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones because I was born in 1960. I realize they're probably a good comparison for some people, but they're really going for such radically different things. The Beatles are about experimentation and breaking the rules while The Stones are about working in a very specific genre. Both are quite good at covering songs which they did when they began.
Strangely enough, both did cover the same song, and The Beatles did a better job, but it didn't seem like The Stones put as much effort into 'I wanna be your man'. It's more of a Beatles song anyway. My favorite Beatle album is 'The White Album', whereas my favorite Rolling Stones album is 'Hot Rocks Volume 1', which is kind of a cheat because it's a greatest hits.
On a side note, I despise Rolling Stone magazine with a red hot passion that borders on insanity. They've included crappy Rolling Stones albums in some of their polls, and the latest stupid thing is their weird love affair with The Beach Boys. Holy crap! Is it because the magazine went to the West Coast? Is it because they want a elevate a band from America?
Nobody is denying that The Beach Boys have great harmonies, but they are so limited in their subject matter that it's kind of a joke. They're also very limited in terms of sound. If you were to compare them to James Taylor, and I don't recommend it, you could say that James Taylor has a very similar sound to his songs. But if you actually listen to the words, he has a wide variety of things that he talks about. And that's the thing about The Beatles. Nobody has the depth or breadth in terms of the things they can do. Most bands settle on a sound and just stick with it.
So, bad comparison, people.
